Mara Burros

Mara Burros is a dedicated mother, activist, philanthropist, and producer.

Her efforts and activities have been largely focused on the areas of health and well-being, strengthening educational and artistic institutions, building community, and fighting bigotry.

Mara’s devoted leadership has made a powerful impact on a breadth of organizations and individuals. Currently a member of the Board of Visitors of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, she also serves and has served on numerous boards, including the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance the 92nd Street Y, the Represent Justice Campaign, the Afya Foundation, and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition.

In addition to her deep engagement in the non-profit sector, Mara leads Be Forward Productions, a production company that supports both film and theatre to galvanize public awareness and action around issues of national and international concern. Their film, Newtown, won the prestigious Peabody Award in 2018.

Mara holds a BA from UW Madison and an MA/Ed.M. in counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is also a certified Hospice Volunteer.
