Humans of Incarceration

Marcus Bullock

“Society wants you to believe that people in prison are animals. So, upon entering prison, I thought it would be me against a bunch of animals,” reveals Marcus Bullock. Marcus was incarcerated as a spirited and energetic 15-year-old child in an adult prison in Virginia. Initially, he often found himself adapting to, rather than contributing to, the attitudes and conversations of his much older peers in prison.

However, Marcus’ initial assumptions about the cruelty of his fellow prisoners were soon challenged. Marcus shares that he actually met some of his best friends in prison, and that without the guidance, companionship, and brotherhood of these new friends, his incarceration would have been much more damaging. Upon his release, Marcus founded and launched Flikshop, a company dedicated to upholding the relationships between incarcerated citizens and their friends and family members through personalized postcards. Marcus’ dedication to reforming the system that kept him behind bars during so many formative years of his life demonstrates his unwavering passion for helping others.
