Humans of Incarceration

Momolu Stewart

“I’m in love with life. Life is a blessing,” declares Momolu Stewart, a former “juvenile lifer,” who was a 16-year-old child when he was sentenced to spend the remainder of his remaining days in prison. Now 40 years old, after countless hardships endured, Momolu is free and enamored with his freedom.

As a six-year-old, Momolu lived through the murder of his father and imprisonment of his mother. During the 23 years he spent incarcerated, Momolu encountered a deficient healthcare system that left his cataracts untreated (he required 5 surgeries when he got out of prison). And after his release, he still struggles to find long-lasting employment, especially in the midst of coronavirus chaos. But Momolu maintains an unfailingly positive attitude, asserting that “only strength can overcome struggle.” An inspiration to all who meet him, he has indeed found his strength.
